Wrestling Sends Athletes to 2020 U23 & UWW Junior Nationals

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers wrestling gets its first taste of competition when it sends 14 student-athletes to the 2020 U23 and UWW Junior Nationals, held Saturday and Sunday at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. All participants will vie for spots in the 2021 senior and junior freestyle team trials. All competitors will wrestle as representatives from the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club (SKWC).

Wrestling begins Saturday at 10 a.m. ET and runs throughout the weekend, with a tournament livestream provided by FloWrestling ($). A full schedule, as well as a list of competitors, can be found below.

Michael VanBrill – who qualified for nationals last season for the Scarlet Knights but is currently unenrolled during the 2020 fall semester – will also compete in Omaha at 70 kg.

Earlier this week, Rutgers Athletics announced that all events at Rutgers Athletics indoor competition venues will operate in accordance with current restrictions on indoor gatherings. Per Governor Phil Murphy’s Executive Orders and Administrative Order No. 220-22, the collective number of people at an indoor event cannot exceed 150. All safety precautions will be in place for those individuals in attendance. Season ticket holders for wrestling will receive information from the Rutgers Ticket Office regarding the next steps and options for their account.

Pegged as high as No. 11 in this year’s preseason polls, Rutgers produced five NCAA qualifiers last season, the sixth consecutive year the program had five or more qualifiers for the championships under head coach Scott Goodale. Aguilar, Alvarez, Janzer, VanBrill and Jordan Pagano (197) were all set to compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.

The Scarlet Knights welcome a large group of newcomers this season, including two-time Big Ten champion Sebastian Rivera and four top-100 recruits from the 2019-20 signing period.
