Tech adds a pair of high school champions on signing day
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced Wednesday that two prospective student-athletes had signed their National Letters of Intent to wrestle in Cassell Coliseum for the Hokies.
“With limited scholarship dollars available we knew that this year’s class would be smaller than the previous two years,” Robie said. “That being said, we feel great about the two guys and their families that are officially joining our program today. In addition to their impressive rankings and accolades on the mat, they both possess all the intangibles that we look for in our student-athletes.”
Cooper Flynn and Trey Kibe come to Blacksburg after impressive high school careers, winning the Prep National Championship and Pennsylvania State Championship, respectively. Both wrestlers are ranked among the top 25 overall recruits in the class of 2021 according to FloWrestling, with Flynn coming in at No. 3 at 126 pounds and Kibe at No. 4 in the 170-pound weight class.
“We believe that both Cooper and Trey are two critical additions to Virginia Tech wrestling that will help us climb the ranks of Division I,” Robie said. “We are thrilled that they are Hokies!”
Cooper Flynn
125 pounds
Seymour, Tenn.
McDonogh High School (Md.)
From Coach Robie: “I believe that Cooper Flynn is just hitting his stride and his best wrestling is still in front of him. His work ethic and toughness are already at an elite level. He wrestles a style that is conducive to success at the college level, as he has the ability to dominate his opponents in every position. His relationship with Sam Latona is one of the biggest reasons Cooper choose Virginia Tech. As a coach, it’s very exciting to know we have another light weight coming in that shares Sam’s mindset. I can’t wait to see how he develops under Coach Brewer and the rest of our staff.”

Trey Kibe
184 pounds
Reedsville, Penn.
Mifflin County High School
From Coach Robie: “Recruiting the top kids in Pennsylvania is a priority for our staff and Trey Kibe certainly falls into that category. Like Cooper, Trey was at the top of our recruiting board last year when we started this process. In fact, Cooper and Trey were the first two home visits we did last year. Trey is an elite performer in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. He is someone I believe will fit perfectly into our culture here in Blacksburg. I anticipate that Trey could start his career at 174 pounds but will likely wrestle the bulk of his career at 184 pounds. He excels in all three positions but is probably best in top position, something that is critically important at the college level.”
