Sting wanted to do a cinematic match with The Undertaker

Although it wasn’t meant to be this way, it was interesting timing with Sting joining AEW and making his promotional debut just under two weeks after The Undertaker bid his farewell to the fans at Survivor Series, a sign of his official retirement.

Sting signed a multi-year deal with AEW after making his Dynamite debut on Wednesday. For years, the WWE Hall of Famer has talked about wanting to do a match with Taker as they never had the chance to wrestle each other with their famous gimmicks.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Sting still wanted to do a cinematic match with Taker. However, Meltzer pointed out that for whatever reason “it has never been a match that appealed to McMahon” despite fans wanting to see it.

Sting mindset apparently changed from wanting a singles match to a cinematic presentation after seeing Taker’s Boneyard Match with AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36. That was WWE’s first high-profile cinematch contest. With Taker now retired and Sting in AEW, that match is not likely to ever take place.

Sting was forced to retire from wrestling because he has spinal stenosis and had neck issues. Taker has gone one record by stating that he didn’t think he would have a good match with Sting once the former WCW star got to WWE due to the damage to his own body.
