Ladder Match to determine new Million Dollar Champion set for TakeOver

68

During Tuesday night’s go-home show for Sunday’s WWE NXT TakeOver: In Your House, WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase brought back the Million Dollar Title.

DiBiase announced during Tuesday’s show that Cameron Grimes vs. LA Knight on Sunday will now be a Ladder Match for the title.

Ted DiBiase unveiled the Million Dollar Championship in 1989. Even though the belt was never officially sanctioned by WWE, DiBiase defended it on ocassion, and dropped it to Virgil at SummerSlam 1991. DiBiase regained the title at the Survivor Series Showdown with the help of Repo Man.  After DiBiase and IRS won the WWE Tag Team Championships on February 7, 1992, DiBiase awarded the title to WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin, under The Ringmaster Moniker, in 1996. Austin would then abandon the title when DiBiase left for rival WCW. The title was brought back in April 2010 for Ted DiBiase Jr., but it never really caught on with fans, and was dropped out of the storyline in November of that same year.

After a 13-year absence, the Million Dollar Belt reappeared on July 6, 2009 episode of WWE Raw the night, when DiBiase was the guest host for that show.

On an episode of a his Something to Wrestle With, Bruce Pritchard stated that even though the Million Dollar Championship was billed as being worth $1 million, the title actually close to $50,000 to make. The belt was created by Betteridge Jewelers in Greenwich, CT, and is gold plated with cubic zirconia, with only three actual diamonds on the back.

WWEShop.com sells replicas of the Million Dollar Championship Belt for $419.99 for a full size replica, and $69.99 for mini replicas.

NXT TakeOver: In Your House will take place live this Sunday from the Capitol Wrestling Center at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.  The event will stream live on Peacock at the WWE Network everywhere else, beginning at 8:00 pm ET.
