With Covid-19 infection rates rising in parts of New York State, an official said Monday that the state “is not inclined to open the winter sports season at this time.”

Practices for winter high school sports, including those with a high-risk designation such as boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, wrestling and competitive cheerleading are scheduled to begin Nov. 30.

“The issue right now … is as we are seeing inclines in different parts of the state we are not inclined to open winter sports at this time,” Budget Director Robert Mujica told reporters.

In a statement, New York State Public High School Athletic Association Executive Director Robert Zayas said the association conferred with state officials Monday and, “At this time, authorization has not been provided for high risk sports to begin play. The high risk sports start date continues to be examined and will be revised if needed but is contingent upon authorization from state officials.”

Bowling, skiing, rifle, indoor track and field and swimming and diving are classified as low or moderate risk sports and they are permitted to be played, Zayas said.

Last week, the Section III Athletic Council, which represents the Syracuse area, announced that it was moving the start date for winter sports to Dec. 14 and also canceled the indoor track and field season.
