Zelina Vega: “I support unionization”
One WWE Superstar is speaking out and letting everyone know that unionization needs to happen in professional wrestling.
Zelina Vega took to Twitter today to say, “I support unionization.”
Vega is one of the names affected by WWE’s ban of third-party platforms like Twitch and Cameo. WWE’s idea is to bring everything in-house and there’s been talk of an in-house agency set up so that the company could handle all outside deals for wrestlers with the company getting a percentage of the revenue generated.
None of this has sat well with the talent and while others are careful not to rip on the company, others like Page have been more outspoken. Paige recently said that she would continue with her Twitch stream because it gives her support to get through her real-life issues and she credits Twitch for improving her mental health after her issues with Alberto Del Rio. Paige has also indicated that she might be in favor if legislation because she has talked about reading up to learn more about unions.
Something to look out for is potential legislation directed at organizations like WWE and UFC. Andrew Yang has said that he would have the ears of the new administration once President-Elect Joe Biden took office on January 20. Yang has said that he promises to work on legislation to help the wrestlers because he believes that they are misclassified as independent contractors. Wrestlers are not allowed to work elsewhere but they are not given the same benefits as company employees.
Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that a few current WWE stars have been talking with Yang in recent weeks.
