Original plans for Roman Reigns at WWE Hell in a Cell

WWE had Roman Reigns defend his Universal Championship against Jey Uso in the first-ever”I Quit Match inside the Hell in a Cell structure at last month’s pay-per-view event.

This was a rematch from the Clash of Champions pay-per-view event, which saw Reigns also successfully defend the strap.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the Reigns vs. Uso rematch at Hell in a Cell was not WWE’s original plan.

Instead, WWE had initially penciled in a fatal four-way bout at the show that would’ve featured Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, and a fourth star. This would explain why WWE never followed up on Reigns having a staredown with Alexa Bliss on an episode of SmackDown last month, which many believed to be a teaser for a match between Reigns and Wyatt.

WWE sent Wyatt and Strowman over to Monday Night Raw during this year’s Draft while Reigns stayed on SmackDown.

WWE’s next pay-per-view event, Survivor Series, will see Reigns square off with WWE Champion Randy Orton in a champion vs. champion match although neither title will be on the line.
