Backstage news on why Leon Ruff was booked to win the WWE NXT North American Title
Last month when Leon Ruff won the WWE NXT Championship from Johnny Gargano, the decision to have Ruff win had some fans wondering what the end game was.
Until last month, Ruff was used as an enhancement talent to put over established stars and when he beat Gargano, the win was treated as a fluke.
Ruff lost the title back to Gargano at TakeOver: WarGames and the decision to have him drop the title so soon has raised more questions with some fans saying that the title was devalued because it was treated as a joke, not because Ruff held the title but because he was booked as someone who was just lucky to have the title in his possession.
On the Wrestling Observer Forum, there was a discussion about Ruff’s short title reign and someone asked why they decided to treat the belt as a joke for a few weeks when NXT has been good at making sure that titles meant something.
Dave Meltzer chimed in with a simple answer: “Somebody in creative thought it was funny.”
The one good thing to come out of this is it looks like Ruff is now a regular character on NXT so the title win has elevated him to a degree. He is scheduled to team with Kushida against Gargano and Austin Theory this Wednesday night.
