Alford, Lovett Advance to UWW Junior National Quarterfinals

OMAHA, Neb. – Three Huskers will wrestle Sunday in the second day of men’s freestyle at UWW Junior Nationals, as Ridge Lovett and Isaiah Alford secured quarterfinal matches and Elise Brown Ton wrestled back through the consolation bracket of the tournament on Saturday.

Lovett rolled through the championship bracket, never giving up a point in his three matches on the day. After a first-round bye, the sophomore earned three consecutive 10-0 technical fall victories to cruise to the quarterfinals. He will meet Carter Young (Team BIG) in Sunday’s quarterfinals at 74 kg.

Alford also recorded three technical fall wins Saturday to cement a place in the 61 kg quarterfinals. He held Kaleb Canoyer scoreless in his second match of the tournament and only gave up four points on the day. In the quarterfinals, he will take on Cade DeVos.

Freshman Brown Ton (74 kg) opened the day with a technical fall win over Jack Chesman to advance to the Round of 16. Following a technical fall defeat in the championship bracket, he scored a four-point takedown on Cory Peterson late in the second period of his first consolation match to keep wrestling in the tournament.

At 61 kg, freshman Dominick Serrano finished the tournament 3-2. He earned an 11-10 decision victory in his first match of the day over Julian Farber, rattling off seven unanswered points in the last minute of the match to advance. After falling in the next bout, Serrano wrestled back through two consolation matches, but ultimately fell in the second round of the Consolation of 16.

Jordan Kelber (61 kg) wrestled in the first session of the day, competing in the U23 division. He earned a first-round bye and struck first in both of his two matches on the day but was unable to finish with a win.

Tomorrow’s action starts at 9 a.m. and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
